"POP" stands for "Post Office Protocol," and it is computer-ese for the process that takes place when you want to receive messages from your Internet service provider email account. If you're prompted to set up POP in your Verizon email client, you will need to supply the system with three pieces of information.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • ISP email server information
  • Username and password for your ISP email account

Step1
Insert the CD-ROM that was sent to you by Verizon when you signed up for Internet service in your CD or DVD drive. Follow the simple prompts to install and activate your Verizon email account.
Step2
Obtain the username and password associated with your Verizon email account. This should be contained in the information package you received with the CD-ROM, or it can be retrieved with the assistance of a Verizon customer service representative. If you contact Verizon to retrieve this information, be prepared to prove your identity before the rep will release your username and password.
Step3
Confirm the name of Verizon's mail server. If it's not "mail.verizon.com," contact Verizon customer service for updated information.
Step4
Enter the name of the Verizon mail server your account is contained on in the field provided when the prompt appears in your Verizon email client.
Step5
Continue to set up your POP account by entering the username associated with your Verizon email when prompted by the system. Keep in mind that your username is usually not the same as your actual name, since many Verizon customers share both a common first name and surname. You may have characters such as dashes, dots or underscores inserted into your username, or a string of numbers at the beginning or end that differentiate you from other users with the same name.
Step6
Complete the setup by entering your correct password into the given field in the POP prompt. You will be able to change your password at a later date. However, to complete this step, you must use the default password provided by Verizon.
Step7
Continue to your email inbox. You should notice that the system has now downloaded all the messages associated with your account which were collected on the Verizon email server. Some systems may require you to close and re-open your Verizon email client, or restart your computer before the configured changes take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • POP only arranges for the delivery of incoming messages. To configure your system to permit the sending of outgoing messages, you will have to go set up your "SMTP" (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol).
