Email has taken over the distribution of information in the USA and in many other parts of the world. Today, all kinds of personal, private and sensitive information passes from one email account to another. One of the most important parts of any email account is the password protecting access to the account. Earthlink makes it easy to change the email password on your account to a stronger password for better protection.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Earthlink email website and log into your account as you do to check your email (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Look for a link to "Profiles," "Options" or "Preferences," and click the link.

  3. Step 3

Find a link allowing you to "Manage" your account or "Change Password" and click the link.

  4. Step 4

Create the new password for your Earthlink email account. Use a combination of at least 6 numbers and letters and avoid words found in the dictionary to increase the security of your accounts.

  5. Step 5

Change the question used to help you access your account in case you forget your password. Click the list of questions and choose a new one. Change the answer in the white box to comply with the new question.

  6. Step 6

Select the appropriate button to apply/save the changes you made to your password. The button is at the bottom of the website.

Tips & Warnings
  • Type passwords in slowly to make sure they are right. Typos are the number one cause of people not logging into their Earthlink email on the first try.
  • Change your Earthlink email password every 3 to 6 months to increase the security level of your account. You can rotate several good passwords over the lifetime of your Earthlink account.
  • Check the "Caps Lock" button to make sure it is off and the "Number Lock" button to make sure it is on if you have problems logging in to your account.
  • You may have to wait up to 20 minutes for your new password to take effect.
  • Don't forget to change the password in the email program on your computer if you use Outlook or another similar program.
  • Never use anniversaries and/or birthdays or other accessible personal information as passwords.
  • Don't use the same password on several different accounts, such as separate email accounts, online banking, forum accounts and member sites. If your password is hacked on one account, the hacker will likely use the same information to try to gain access to other accounts.
