How to Use Eudora Mail on a Palm Pilot

Given the mobility and convenience of the Palm Pilot and related palm mail electronics products, many Eudora Mail users choose to synchronize the two. Doing this links users' Eudora Mail and Palm Pilot inboxes, allowing users to receive, read and reply to messages in real time. Accomplishing this is a two-step process: first, you must make configuration adjustments to prioritize Eudora Mail as your desktop email client. Then, you must HotSync your handheld device with Eudora Mail.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Eudora Mail version 3.01 or higher
  • Palm Pilot

Configure Your Eudora Mail as Your Desktop Email Client

Step1
Open your Eudora client. From the "Menu" bar, navigate to the "Tools" menu.
Step2
Select the "Options" category from the "Tools" menu. Click through to open the "Options" dialogue box.
Step3
Scroll through the "Options" menu until you locate the "Category" list. From here, you will use the MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) option.
Step4
Use the option that reads "Use Eudora MAPI Server: When Eudora is running." The wording may be slightly different, depending on the Eudora Mail version you are using. Select the option, bearing in mind that you should not enable the "Always" option. The "Always" option will prevent MS Exchange from operating on your system, which will, in turn, prevent you from synching up Eudora Mail and your Palm Pilot.
Step5
Select "OK," and follow any prompts you are given to complete the requested operation. On some systems, you may be asked to shut down and restart Eudora Mail before the changes will take effect.

HotSync Your Eudora Mail to Your Palm Pilot

Step1
Activate your Palm Pilot. Ensure that a HotSync application is installed and is fully functional.
Step2
Perform a HotSync operation--any HotSync operation--after you have successfully configured Eudora Mail to be your primary desktop email client. Performing any HotSync operation after configuration will automatically prompt Eudora Mail to synch up with your Palm Pilot inbox.
Step3
Solve troubleshooting issues by contacting your Palm Pilot manufacturer, or use the Internet to find information on how to solve common problems. KB Palm has extensive troubleshooting pages which you may find useful (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Eudora Mail versions earlier than version 3.01 are not fully MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) compliant. These earlier Eudora Mail versions will not sync up on a Palm Pilot, so you should upgrade to a more recent Eudora Mail client if you want to access it from your handheld device.
