How to Configure Speech Recognition Software in XP
The Microsoft Office XP software package adds the powerful feature of full speech recognition to the Windows XP operating system. The Windows XP speech recognition software converts spoken words into text. It will work with all programs requiring text entry, including web browsers and word processors. It's relatively simple to configure and use.

1
Plug in a microphone or headset before configuring the speech recognition software in Windows XP. The headset must work by recording your voice with the Windows sound recorder. Be sure the microphone's volume is turned up and not muted in the Windows XP mixer dialog.
-
2
Install Office XP if you haven't already done so. Installing Office XP is required to enable the Windows XP speech recognition software. Insert the Office XP CD or DVD into your computer and follow the directions in the installer.
-
-
3
Enable speech recognition. Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Speech. You will be presented with a dialog with several tab options. Among them are "Text to Speech" and "Speech Recognition." Click on the "Speech Recognition" tab.
-
4
Select a language. All languages have different pronunciation rules and dialects, so select the most appropriate language from the Language drop-down field. The software may have already done this for you by detecting which language you chose when you installed Windows.
-
5
Choose the profile you want to use from the Recognition Profile group. You will need to configure a separate profile for each user of the program.
-
6
Click "Train Profile" to configure your speech profile. A voice-training wizard will be presented. Follow the directions in the wizard to begin training.
-
7
Switch between Dictation and Voice Command modes. Dictation mode will allow you to dictate text while the Voice Command mode will allow you to switch between and open and close programs by using voice commands.
-
8
Dictate text. Once the Windows XP speech recognition software is configured and ready to be used, you can begin dictating text in your applications.
-
9
Switch to the application in which you wish to dictate text. Select "Microphone" from the language bar at the bottom of the screen. When you're finished dictating text, turn the microphone off, as leaving it on can cause random text to be typed.

Tips & Warnings
Though array and built-in microphones work, the background noise they pick up is often unacceptable, so try a headset or handheld microphone.
When using the microphone, be sure it's not too close to your mouth. Don't breathe into it.
