Step 1
Mark off a space in your home for a bird cage and accessories before you pet sit. You should use a home office or spare room to isolate the bird from nuisances.
-
Step 2
Scoop out food and snacks in correct portions. You can utilize sandwich bags for each portion, mark each bag with a date and empty the food into the bird's cage for quick and easy feeding.
-
Step 3
Request a list of emergency contacts. Obtain contact information for the veterinarian, the local animal hospital and any backup care providers.
-
Step 4
Schedule play time each morning and afternoon. Use weighted toys and dangling toys along with snacks to keep the bird amused.
-
Step 5
Separate your own pets from the bird to avoid undue stress. Birds react strongly to loud noises and antagonism from other birds. You should find a place in your home where your own pets rarely go, and store the bird's cage and toys there.
-
Step 6
Place several pieces of newspaper at the bottom of your bird cage to deal with pet waste. Clear out the newspaper three times a week to dispose of the waste.
-
Step 7
Ask your the bird's owners about any special commands and gestures used with exotic birds. Your pet sitting experience will be easier if you know, for example, how to get a pet parrot to fly a short distance, control its chirping and remain perched.
-
Step 8
Provide a fresh bowl of water at least once a day. Monitor the temperature and level of debris in the water bowl to prevent health problems.
-
Step 9
Learn to use claw and feather clippers to groom the bird if your friend intends to be gone for more than a month. Ask your friend to supply the grooming kit. Or add information for the bird's regular groomer to your contact list.
