How to Take a Dog on a Car Ride
Taking a dog on a car ride can be an enjoyable experience, especially if you begin training your dog to accompany you on trips when he is a puppy. A few other simple guidelines will help both you and your dog have a stress-free car ride.

1
Begin training your dog to ride in the car beginning at as young an age as possible. Place your puppy in the back seat of the car with the engine off. Feed him a treat. Repeat this several times before attempting to go for a car ride.
-
2
Turn the engine on while your dog is sitting in the car. Notice how he reacts. If he seems comfortable, go for a short 5-minute car ride around the neighborhood.

3
Place your dog in a crate (especially if he is a puppy) for the first few car rides so that he feels safe and secure. You could also use a puppy car seat. This will not only protect your puppy in the event of an accident, it will also prevent him from jumping into the front of the car while you're driving.
-
4
Choose a destination that your dog will like. Take her to a local dog park or pet supply store with treats. Your dog will then associate the car with a positive experience.
-
5
Refrain from feeding your dog for several hours before your ride. You don't want him throwing up in the car.
-
6
Make sure your dog goes to the bathroom before your ride, especially before any long journeys.
-
7
Place an identification tag on your dog's collar, especially when traveling. Include any other important tags, such as a rabies vaccination tag and your dog license.

Tips & Warnings
Do not expect your dog to be excited about going for a car ride at first, especially if the only times you have gone for a ride are to the veterinarian.
Remember that your mood greatly effects your dog's experience. He can tell if you are upset and will react negatively if you get upset in traffic. Remain calm and your dog will, too.
Leaving your dog unattended in the car can lead to serious conditions, such as heatstroke or hypothermia, depending on the season. Leave the windows cracked and never leave a dog in the car for an extended period.
