Tennis apparel has gone through major upgrades in the past several years. Gone are the days of "tennis whites" as the only acceptable fashion on the court. There are styles to suit every personality, as evidenced by the players of any major televised tournament. Select your tennis apparel according to your individual preferences.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start by taking a look around, especially if you're just beginning in tennis and have no tennis apparel whatsoever. You can get a good idea of the going trends by visiting your local courts and watching others play. When you see something you like, make a note of it. You might even want to ask a player where she got her top. Most likely she'll be flattered--as long as she's not in the middle of a point!

  2. Step 2

Select a few shirts that suit you. If you're going to be playing with some regularity, you'll probably want at least three tops. Not only do you want to show some variety on the court, but shirts get soaked pretty quickly when playing tennis. Make sure the shirts fit and allow you a full range of motion, especially for your serve.

  3. Step 3

Select shorts or skirts that breathe, without being too tight or restricting your movement. Lighter colors will keep you cooler on hot days.

  4. Step 4

Find at least one jacket or sweatshirt, and a pair of long pants that you can play in on chilly days. Preferably these will be items you can wear over lighter clothes, so you can remove them if you start to get too warm.

  5. Step 5

Take your time in finding the right shoes. Your tennis shoes will get a workout as you race around the court. Make sure they are extremely comfortable and support your feet properly. A pro shop salesperson should be able to help you select the right footwear, allowing you to perform your best and avoid injury.

  6. Step 6

Find tennis apparel online at sites such as tennissweetspot.com or fortylovetennis.com (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • While tennis apparel has become more casual over the years, some private clubs may still require collars for men and skirts for women. Be sure to check the policies at your court before investing in an entire wardrobe.
  • Be careful when modeling your wardrobe after your favorite professional player. The stars like to push the envelope, and top designers often design their outfits for shock value. They might get you some strange looks at the municipal courts.
