You must putt well to consistently win at golf. Consider you will hit the driver approximately 14 times in a given round. If you have a solid round of putting, you may hit the putter only 30 times in the round. Since putting makes up a large percentage of strokes in golf, putt better to lower scores quickly.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Putting surface at home or a practice facility
  • Putter
  • Golf balls
  1. Step 1

Go to a local putting green or use a putting green at home or in the office.

  2. Step 2

Find a smooth, flat area of the green where putts roll straight.

  3. Step 3

Place a ball on the green approximately 2 feet from the cup.

  4. Step 4

Hold the putter and stand to the side of the ball with your feet together so the ball is directly in line with the line created between your feet.

  5. Step 5

Move your left foot out under your left shoulder and then move your right foot out under your right shoulder (for righthanders). The ball should be in the middle of your stance.

  6. Step 6

Hold the putter by the grip in a way that feels natural and comfortable. You can hold the grip in the same way you hold other clubs, grip the club with all ten fingers or put your left hand low (for righthanders).

  7. Step 7

Bend your knees slightly and tilt your back until the putter touches the ground. Let your arms hang down naturally from your body.

  8. Step 8

Position your body so the middle of the putter club head is directly behind the ball. The ball should be in between the club and hole on a straight line.

  9. Step 9

Lift the putter slightly off the ground.

  10. Step 10

Swing the putter back a little and then swing it forward. Focus on making a smooth swing returning the putter to the same position it was in at the start of the swing.

  11. Step 11

Allow the putter to swing through the ball. Practice the 2-foot putt until you consistently find the cup.

  12. Step 12

Move away from the hole by another foot and go through the same routine of lining up to the ball and hitting the putt.

  13. Step 13

Continue to move further from the cup 1 foot at a time. Pay close attention to how hard you have to hit the ball to make it to the cup.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask a friend to look at your alignment with the putter head and the ball. If the ball is not in the middle of the putter, ask your friend to guide you until it is.
