Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sparring partner
  1. Step 1

Do a drawing ankle throw in Brazilian jiu-jitsu when your opponent tries to deliver a straight punch to your head. Wait until your opponent steps forward with his right foot to deliver the punch with his right hand.

  2. Step 2

Step to the right of your opponent and use an inside block to her forearm to stop the punch. Your body should be pivoting as you step to the side so that you are staring at the side of your opponent's head.

  3. Step 3

Place your left foot near the right foot of your attacker, using your heel to brace yourself against his instep. Keep your toes just above the top of your opponent's foot, and don't make contact until you start the throw. This will keep your opponent off balance, and make it difficult for him to step forward to defend against the throw.

  4. Step 4

Bring your right hand underneath your opponent's left armpit. Grab a hold of her shirt and wrap it around your fist to prepare for the force of the throw.

  5. Step 5

Push your opponent quickly to the left with your right arm, and bring the heel of your left foot sharply down on top of his right foot. Take a step back with your right foot for balance as you do the throw. You will need a sudden, unexpected push to trip your opponent effectively and throw him to the ground.

  6. Step 6

Practice this move repeatedly with a sparring partner until you learn to shift your weight to throw your opponent even further. You must do the complete drawing ankle throw within a second or two to catch your opponent by surprise.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be cautious when your step down on your opponent's instep with your heel. This can be extremely painful for your opponent, and you risk spraining or fracturing his ankle when he falls down to the mat.
