While the martial arts discipline of Brazilian jiu-jitsu focuses on grappling and ground-fighting techniques, the side snap kick is a common offensive move. Use this kick to attack your opponent's shins, knees and groin area.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sparring partner
  • Practice bag
  1. Step 1

Face your opponent in a defensive stance, with your fists raised and your left foot forward. Your left shoulder should be turned toward your opponent in order to deliver more powerful kicks and punches from your right side.

  2. Step 2

Pivot away from your opponent on the ball of your left foot while simultaneously lifting your right leg up crisply at the knee. This should make your body perpendicular to the body of your opponent, with your right side facing him.

  3. Step 3

Kick your leg straight out at your opponent, aiming your foot low, preferable toward the knee, thigh or groin in a downward motion. The outside ridge of your foot should make the first contact with your opponent's body. If your opponent is facing you with one leg in front of the other, strike at the knee on the forward leg. If properly delivered, the side snap kick in Brazilian jiu-jitsu should knock your opponent off balance, making her fall to the ground.

  4. Step 4

Bring your kicking leg back to its original position, with your knee bent and your foot still elevated. This action should be executed crisply, to put the "snap" in the side snap kick.

  5. Step 5

Return your foot to the ground and resume your original defensive stance, with your arms up and your left foot forward.

  6. Step 6

Practice the side snap kick in Brazilian jiu-jitsu with a sparring partner or a practice bag until can do it with speed and precision, striking any location on your opponent's body at will. Delivering the kick in two precise movements, starting with the bending of the knee and following up with the kick, will produce the snapping movement that will create more force and power for your attack.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are left-handed, reverse your defensive stance so that your right shoulder faces your opponent, delivering your kicks and punches from the left side.
