An obi otoshi move in judo is also known as a belt throw, since it is accomplished by grabbing your opponent's belt and throwing him backwards against your hip. Upper-body strength is the key to executing an obi otoshi throw. Through practice and physical conditioning, you will be able to do this move flawlessly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do an obi otoshi during the grappling phase of a judo match. Place your left hand on the shoulder or lapel of your opponent, and take a step back with your right foot.

  2. Step 2

Grab the belt of your opponent with your right hand. You can either grab the belt by the knot or slip your fingers around both layers of the belt, coming in from beneath it with all four fingers pointing upward.

  3. Step 3

Pull your opponent toward you in a sudden movement, using your left hand to push forward and knock your opponent off balance. Step back with your left foot at the same time, further shifting the balance toward you.

  4. Step 4

Place your right foot directly in front of the right foot of your opponent. Then, place your left foot completely behind your opponent's body.

  5. Step 5

Shift your opponent's body to your right side while maintaining your tight grip on your opponent's belt with your right hand, placing your body perpendicular to his as you pivot. Use your left hand to push away your opponent's arm as you start to push his body backward. This will further upset your opponent's balance.

  6. Step 6

Reach around your opponent's stomach with your left hand. Put all of your weight on your right leg while putting your left leg between the legs of your opponent.

  7. Step 7

Put your left foot behind your opponent's left foot. Bend your knees and drop your hips, pulling your opponent's body toward you. Use your hip to push your opponent's hip upward while pulling back on his belt. Your opponent should fall over backward, over your hip and onto the mat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep steady pressure on your opponent's belt when you do the obi otoshi during a judo match. By continually pulling backward against your own body, you prevent your opponent from regaining his footing during the move, effectively defending against the throw.
  • Make sure that your footing and your balance are stable before attempting the obi otoshi move.
