Things You'll Need:

  • Sport sambo training facility
  • Sport sambo training instructor
  • Sparring partner
  • Mat
  1. Step 1

Learn to do sport sambo throws by seeking instruction in a sambo class or training facility. Instruction from a certified Master of Sport in sambo should be considered mandatory, since sport sambo throws can be dangerous if not properly supervised. You can contact local martial arts centers where you live to find out if the sport sambo discipline is being taught.

  2. Step 2

Focus on how to properly do sport sambo throws as per the rules of competition. In sport sambo, perfectly executed throws, where an opponent is knocked down to the ground through one single movement, constitutes an immediate victory. Your sport sambo instructor should be able to train you on the most effective throwing techniques used to achieve victory in a sport sambo match.

  3. Step 3

Practice your sport sambo throws with a willing sparring partner. Ensure that you are practicing in a large area clear of obstacles and debris, so that you will not be injured when you fall on the ground. You should also use a padded mat to reduce the chance of injury when you or your opponent is thrown to the ground.

  4. Step 4

Do your sport sambo throws by working within the various stance distances used in competition. These distances include non-catching distance (where competitors do not touch each other), long distance (where the competitors only touch the sleeves of the opponent), medium distance (where you may touch the sleeves and the front of the uniform), close distance (where legs and arms are intertwined) and quarter distance (which uses full body contact).

  5. Step 5

Identify the three groups of sport sambo throws used in competition. These include throws that are made with the legs, throws that are made with your body and throws that are made with your arms. Use online resources, such as the Siberian Association of Traditional Martial Arts website, to find diagrams of the many sub-categories of sport sambo throws (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Sport sambo differs from other martial arts, such as judo, in that all types of leg holds are legal during competition, but absolutely no choke holds are allowed.
