Things You'll Need:
- Gi
- Obi
- Pants with drawstring or elastic waist
- Jo
- Bokken
- Tanto
-
Step 1
Choose a uniform, or "gi," that has been designed specifically for aikido. The uniforms are typically made of heavier and thicker material than that used in other types of martial arts, such as karate or kung fu. Your gi must be able to withstand the constant grappling, throwing and joint-locking that occurs during aikido maneuvers. When choosing a specialized gi for aikido, pick one designed for judo. The gis for both judo and aikido use a durable material. Note the sleeves on the uniform. Some gis may have shorter sleeves that allow an opponent to grip your elbow and forearm.
-
Step 2
Choose pants for aikido that are lightweight and feature either a drawstring or elastic waist for mobility while training. Don't wear black pants, which are usually reserved for aikido instructors.
-
Step 3
Collect weapons. In aikido, you will be expected to both retain and disarm weapons, such as the short staff (jo), wooden sword (bokken) and knife (tanto). You'll use practice versions of these weapons which have dulled edges to reduce the chance of injury during practice.
-
Step 4
Use online resources, such as Bu Jin Design, to pick out your supplies for aikido (see Resources below). These websites offer a variety of uniforms, accessories, books and storage bags that will help give you a competitive edge when you practice aikido.
-
Step 5
Ask your aikido sensei (teacher) to help you pick the right supplies. In many cases, a dojo will feature a customized line of uniforms and accessories that feature the sensei's logo, and you may be required to purchase your supplies directly through the dojo. This is meant to create conformity within the dojo, not to generate extra income for the sensei.
