Encouraging kids to get into sports is a good way to promote health and fitness. The trick is finding a sport that kids like to play. Disc golf is incredibly easy for children to get into. It doesn't take a lot of money for equipment or memberships and it is only as competitive as you want it to be. Disc golf is also not very strenuous. The sport is low impact and promotes cardiovascular health and a good mental attitude.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tennis shoes
  • Flying discs
  1. Step 1

Purchase a membership in the Professional Disc Golf Association for your kids (see Resources below). This can qualify them for various tournaments and other fun programs.

  2. Step 2

Enter your child in a disc golf tournament if she is a competitive person. This is a good way to encourage friendly competition and teamwork since a lot of tournaments feature doubles play.

  3. Step 3

Start following the top players and tournaments. Children often try to emulate their favorite sports heroes and there are many exciting disc golfers to watch.

  4. Step 4

Introduce children to disc golf early on during their formative years. Children often struggle with conformity and rigidity in sports and one of the benefits of disc golf is its low-key atmosphere and sense of individualism.

  5. Step 5

Find a disc golf course in your hometown or close by. If one happens to be in a park, have a family outing to the park and bring your child near the course. Answer his questions with enthusiasm. Give a set of flying discs and a golf bag as a gift.

  6. Step 6

Get your kids into shape for playing disc golf. Some couch potato kids may have difficulty walking even easy courses, so get them out and moving and let them know it's okay to stop and take a breather. Just let others play through.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a child that is averse to sports, don't introduce flying disc golf as a sport. Take a couple of discs and simply walk around the park with your child. Let him discover the enjoyment for himself.
  • Though disc golf is very low impact, you should always talk to a doctor before starting an exercise program.
