How to Observe Divine Mercy Sunday

On Mercy Sunday, or the Feast of Divine Mercy, Catholics can request forgiveness for past transgressions. This relatively new feast occurs on the Sunday after Easter. Catholics revere it as the day on which Jesus forgives even the gravest sins.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Copy of Divine Mercy Image
      • 1

Ensure that there is no mortal sin on your conscience. Mortal sins are committed with full intention, and they can completely detach you from God and the rewards of Heaven. A priest can answer any questions you have about mortal sins.

      • 2

Detach yourself from any venial--or lesser--sins. This means separating yourself from temptations or the desire to succumb to them.

      • 3

Go to confession so that you may absolve yourself of any sins. This is an important step to take before receiving holy communion.

      • 4

Offer up prayers for the intentions of the Pope and the holy Catholic Church.

      • 5

Receive communion. This should be done during Mass on the Sunday after Easter.

      • 6

Resolve to do works of charity and to help others in the coming days and months.

      • 7

Obtain a copy of the Divine Mercy Image. You can keep it in your home or take a small copy with you to Mass. You can even ask a priest to bless your image. To help you observe this feast day, you can find this image at Divine Mercy Sunday (see Resources below).

    Tips & Warnings

    • Although not required, it is a good idea to engage in all of the rituals of Divine Mercy on the same day.

    • Although Divine Mercy Sunday is a day of renewal and atonement for all Catholics, don't wait until this day to receive absolution. Catholics regularly should make a confession, receive the sacrament of communion and observe the Sabbath to maintain their relationships with God.
