Step 1
Try on formal gowns. Conventionally, gowns worn by debutantes would be white with long, arm-length gloves to accompany them. Today, debutantes take more liberty in their color and style choices.
-
Step 2
Look for debutante gowns in retail-clothing stores where you have had good past experience with the sizing of the clothing. If the clothes at a certain store tend to fit your body type well, there is a good chance that any gowns it carries will also be flattering on you. Retail stores tend to design their fashion lines with a certain demographic of women in mind.
-
Step 3
Visit vintage stores to find a gown with a classic look to wear to your debutante ball. Though the gowns in these stores are likely to be more expensive than those at retail stores, you will have a better chance of finding a one-of-a-kind dress if you do a little extra work to dig through the vintage racks.
-
Step 4
Work with a professional seamstress or tailor to get the perfect fit for your gown. Once you have found a gown that you love, it is a good idea to have it tailored to fit your body, especially around your chest and waist. The tailor or seamstress will also be able to hem the edge of your dress to make sure you do not trip over your gown during your big moment at the ball.
-
Step 5
Buy new undergarments to wear underneath your gown if necessary. If you are wearing a strapless gown, you may need to purchase a strapless bra specially designed to be worn underneath this type of garment. It is worth it to spend the money on good undergarments, as they will play a big role in the way your dress looks as well as your posture and the way you carry yourself.
