Thanks to university web hosting, it's now easier than ever to put your graduate course work online. Whenever you put your work on a network, there are a few protocols that you should follow to protect your ownership

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Talk to your graduate school's technology office to find out about your options for free hosting. Most schools have begun to offer limited space on their network to allow students to put their course work online, either by adding it to a department site or a personal web page.
Step2
Convert any of your graduate paper work to a read-only file. Ideally, you want to host your work in Portable Document Format (PDF). This type of file is easily read by virtually any computer and allows you to limit changes to your graduate course work by a third party.
Step3
Check that all sources are properly credited in your paperwork before you upload it. Always include the works cited page whenever you put your course work online, even if you are using footnotes in the body of your work.
Step4
Create a private section of your web page so you have a place to back up works in progress. This section of your website should be password-protected so that only you will be able to access the files. Regularly back up your work on the network, your personal computer and a removal-media drive so that your work will be saved if one of the devices fails.
Step5
Include a link to your website in your resume so that prospective employers and research partners can easily review your work. Remember to keep the content of your website professional since almost anyone will have access to it.
Step6
Add your work to indexing sites if it is published in a journal. There are many free indexing sites, like the government-run Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Some programs can allow you to password-protect your PDF files so that they cannot be printed. This feature can be useful for controlling the circulation of your graduate course work, but remember that some employers will want to have a hard copy.
  • Many student web pages are shut off 6 months after you graduate, so be sure that you look into alternative web hosts to keep your work online after you finish school.
