Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make a list of your needs. Decide what you want to track, how detailed you want the results to be and who will use the software. Be as detailed as you can when you make your list, starting with the most (vital) features you want and going down the list to little details, such as the speed of loading or automatic saving.
Step2
Select a system at a level you can manage. Feeling intimidated by a system will only make you afraid of using it. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn how the tracking software works, however, select one that is a little more advanced and detailed than what you are used to.
Step3
Evaluate the cost of installation as you set your budget for business tracking software. These programs are usually expensive, and you may need to pay extra to have an expert install one for you. You may also want to hire someone to teach you how to use the program, increasing your costs even more.
Step4
Select three or four programs rather than going with the first one that seems acceptable. Once you have narrowed down the choices to just a few, you should be able to better compare and evaluate your options. This is the right time to start looking at extra features, guarantees, technical support and other things that may push one business tracking program ahead of the others.
Step5
Look for a demo. If you cannot find one online, you may be able to call the company and request a CD with a trial program--either a full version that stops working after a few days or a simplified version that isn't fully functional. This will allow you to try out the program firsthand and see whether it is a good match for your capabilities and the needs of your company.
