They're fun, they're small, and they add pizzazz to your church rock group, salsa band, or children's party. Anyone who can keep time can play them, even children. But those simple little things can cost a whole five bucks in a music store. You can have fun with your kids and get a sound just as good if you make them yourselves.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toy eggs that open into two halves, like the kind that hold candy at Easter time
  • Measuring spoon
  • Dry uncooked rice in a cup
  • Super glue or good tape
  • Newspaper to work on
  1. Step 1

Set up your supplies on your kitchen table. Hold the bottom half of each egg while your child measures a teaspoon full of rice into each.

  2. Step 2

Apply a thin line of super glue around the edge of the half of the egg you are holding.

  3. Step 3

Close the top half the egg over the bottom half, and set it down on a paper towel to allow it to dry. If super glue isn't available, use good tape around the outside of the egg instead.

  4. Step 4

Start up the music and the shaking!

Tips & Warnings
  • The rice contents are non-toxic.
  • Adult supervision is needed when using super glue.
