How to Give a Creative Valentine's Day Gift

Stuck in a rut about what to do this Valentine's Day? Don't want to do the same song and dance of candy and flowers? There are some very creative and different things that you can do for your sweetheart that will make you stand out in the crowd. These items come from the heart, mostly, not from the local big box store. All of these ideas will be written with the woman as gift recipient but they will work equally well with a guy recipient.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • time
  • effort

Step1
Give her part of her childhood back.
What this means is that you will be showing her that you listen to her and that you want to give her the things that she missed. Did she crave unicorn tea sets? Pine over the latest Atari game that she missed out on? Find it and give it to her. Check ebay, check the swap boards, you can even put up a free ad on craigslist and freecycle.org to try and find it. Keep in mind that things like this really mean that you will need to attempt your gift months in advance. This also works in your favour as it shows that you didn't get it the day before.
Step2
Give her part of yourself.
Write her a poem, a letter, a short story telling about how the two of you met. Write it yourself for even more meaning, or have it professionally done by hiring a writer to do it for you. Obviously it will be better having it done yourself, no matter the quality, because it shows that you care. Having it professionally done is good too, but you will need to make sure it is personalized and deals directly with the two of you. Think retelling the first kiss, the first meeting, or any other important event in the life of your relationship
Step3
Give her dinner.
Skip the flowers, skip the chocolates, and skip the hearts wrapping paper. Cook her dinner. Extra points if you can't cook. By taking time to open a cookbook, buy the ingredients, and plan out the meal, you show her that she is worthy of both your time and your effort. It can be a fancy meal, or you can give her a very simple meal that is one of her favourites done up fancy. (Think sterling platters and domes that you can uncover to reveal her favourite way to have a cheeseburger fixed) Don't be surprised if you end up as the dessert!

Tips & Warnings

  • Hopefully these three examples have shown you that Valentine's Day doesn't have to be cards and candy, that it can come with real meaning and thought. Showing her that is the best gift you can give her and will last in her memory a lifetime.

on 3/19/2008 It's the little things that matter most - reminding them year-round of your love is the best gift of all. It can be a simple post-it note or an unexpected gift. There are sites like www.remindyourlove.com and www.redenvelope.com that make this pretty easy...and they carry some of the items mentioned above...good luck.

on 1/26/2008 A part of her childhood back? If any guy actually listened close enough to complete step one for me then I would more then likely cry just for the thoughfulness of it all. They could be a jerk the whole rest of the night and it still would not undo it.
