How to Develop a Time Schedule to Write

  1. Step 1

Analyze how you currently use your time. Create a typical weekly schedule and notice where your time is spent most.

  2. Step 2

Develop your own writing space. Clear off a desk or move it to a quieter room. Some people like to write in public places like coffee shops or bookstores. Having an area just for writing will help you be more consistent.

  3. Step 3

Create more time to write by eliminating unnecessary activities. For example, limit your television time and the amount of time you research a topic. Consider how much time you spend for coffee breaks, telephone conversations or catalogue browsing.

  4. Step 4

Determine if you are a morning or evening person. What time of day are you most productive? Preserve this time for writing.

  5. Step 5

If you have multiple projects, switch from one to the other to avoid becoming bored or frustrated. Just be sure to keep deadlines in mind.

  6. Step 6

Know when you should stop writing. Sometimes working yourself too hard can cause you to loose time in the long run, especially when you spend time making your writing worse rather than better.

  7. Step 7

Create a "to do" list to keep yourself on track. Consult it at the end of your writing session to see if you accomplished what you set out to do.

Tips & Warnings
  • A strict or consistent writing schedule may not be best for every writer so try to find a way of writing that works for you and your lifestyle.
