How to Host a Meteorite Party

If you need a party idea, try throwing a meteorite, or shooting star, party. The theme for these nighttime parties can be romantic or fun. Star themed foods and decorations add flair, and the late night viewing makes a meteorite party an all night affair.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Visit StarDate.org (see Resources below for link) to get the dates of expected meteor showers. This website tells you when the stars peak and how bright the moon will be. Summer and fall are the best seasons for a shooting star party because the temperatures are fair.
Step2
Buy star themed plates, utensils, tablecloths and decorations. Tie some star shaped helium balloons onto tables or deck posts.
Step3
Serve star shaped food such as cookies, star fruit slices, star sandwiches, star gelatin and a cake decorated with stars. Cook regular barbeque fare such as hot dogs and hamburgers too.
Step4
Plan a meteorite pool party and barbeque for summer. Float a bunch of rafts in the pool for star viewing, or set up lounge chairs and blankets in the grass.
Step5
Have friends spend the night in the fall with a camping meteorite party. Set up tents, a fire pit and some outside games. Use lounge chairs or air mattresses for viewing the meteor shower.
Step6
Roast hot dogs and marshmallows, serve chili and make s’mores during a camping party.
Step7
Play meteorite themed games before and during the shooting star show. Let guests find popular constellations by using printouts from StarDate.org, and have a meteorite counting competition during the meteor shower.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have plenty of bug spray available during the party, especially in the summer.
  • Blow out any candles, turn off lights and put out the campfire before the meteor shower starts. The more light around you at the time of the meteor shower makes the shooting stars harder to see.
  • Even though binoculars and telescopes won’t be necessary for the meteor shower, having some on hand lets guests explore the sky.
  • Don't plan a party for a night when the moon is full. The moonlight washes out the meteor shower and makes the stars harder to see.
