If you don’t know the difference between Ginger and Maryann, never heard of Uncle Arthur and don’t have a clue who Fred Mertz is, then you need some brushing up on your classic TV knowledge. Here are some tips on how to be a classic TV fan.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Television with cable or satellite service
  • DVD player
  • Computer with Internet access

Step1
Get to know Marcia Brady, Opie Taylor, Archie Bunker, Maxwell Smart and Lucy Ricardo. If you have never seen an episode of the Brady Bunch, have never checked out the residents in the town of Mayberry, then you need to learn about some key classic TV icons. Some of the most well known classic TV characters include Archie Bunker ("All in the Family"), Arthur Fonzarelli/Fonzie ("Happy Days"), Lucy and Ricky Ricardo ("I Love Lucy"), Captain Kirk ("Star Trek") and Mary Richards ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"). If you are truly serious about being a classic TV fan, research these characters and know who they are.
Step2
Check out classic TV shows. Some shows, like I Love Lucy and The Brady Bunch, have been on the air for decades and can still easily be found on television today. There are a handful of TV networks dedicated to classic TV (most notably, TV Land and Nickelodeon). And just about every classic TV show ever created is out on DVD. Look for series like "The Andy Griffith Show", "Happy Days", "Bewitched" and "M*A*S*H".
Step3
Check out classic TV websites. The Classic TV database, Bewitched.net, TVLand.com and Morty’s TV are just a few great sites devoted to classic TV. You can find detailed information about characters, episode guides and more (see Resources below).
Step4
Participate in classic TV message boards. Join the TV Land message boards and TV Land’s MySpace page. TV Land has dozens of message boards devoted to individual classic shows, and their Ask TVTheLink page is a great place to post classic TV related questions.
Step5
Know the theme songs. True classic TV fans know the words to "The Brady Bunch" theme by heart. They know the theme to “Love American Style, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father" and they can tell the difference between the "Hawaii Five-O" theme and the "Lost in Space" theme. Televisiontunes.com hosts thousands of popular theme songs--a must for any classic TV fan (see Resources below).
