Putting tire chains on in the snow can be quick and easy if you know how to do it properly. Too often people get in a hurry and make it a difficult, complicated process. It need not be once you learn that there is a faster, better way of doing it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tire Snow Chains
  • Stretchable Snow Chain Tighteners
  1. Step 1

Before You need to use the snow chains check to make sure they are not tangled or twisted. Note the side that may have cleats so that this side can be faced up when installed.

  2. Step 2

When ready to use the chains slowly drape the chains OVER the top of the tire making sure the middle section of the chains are on the TOP middle of the tire.

  3. Step 3

Straighten up the chains so that they are evenly distributed over the tire and on both side of the tire.

  4. Step 4

Check to see that the chain hook is on the backside and the loose end with no hook is on the nearest end towards the rear of the automobile.

  5. Step 5

Hook the chain on the back side first and then on the front side, adjusting as needed to make sure all sections are evenly distributed.

  6. Step 6

Fasten the chain tightener on the front of the tire in a triangular pattern so that the chains are well secured in an even manner.

  7. Step 7

Drive a short distance and double check the chain installation to make sure the chains are tight enough or if it looks like they need a last minute adjustment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Three or four extra pieces of removable links or even a loose wire on the end of the chains can help pull them into a tighter position much quicker. (These extra pieces should be removed when installation is completed)
  • Installation can be done as fast as 5 minutes a tire once the method is learned.
  • Loose or crooked chains can fall off or wrap around an axle if you are not careful to put them on evenly.
