With so many demands pulling families different directions, home often becomes a place where we stop in to shower, eat, sleep and nothing more. Today families are drifting further apart than ever before. We have to take time and put in the effort to build stronger families.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Lay a basic structure by setting reasonable, consistent rules. Parents must communicate clearly so that children know exactly what the consequences of breaking the rules will be.
Step2
Respect each member of the family. If parents are not respectful to each other and to their children there is no reason to expect children to learn or give respect to others.
Step3
Share household responsibilities. Each family member plays a significant role in the family and should have assigned responsibilities and be held accountable for completing their tasks.
Step4
Display affection openly. Parents should display affection for one another in front of their children and encourage children to be loving, caring, affectionate and appreciative of each family member. Freely give hugs, kisses, praise and encouragement.
Step5
Communicate openly and honestly. Each member of the family should be encouraged to express what they need and want. They should practice good listening skills to facilitate communication.
Step6
Plan quality time together. Life can get busy so schedule time to talk, listen and enjoy one another. Each person has the opportunity to voice their opinion and the family should be able to discuss decisions and make future plans. Quality time is also a good time to plan family activities, projects or vacations.
Step7
Nurture positive self-esteem of each family member individually. Each of us have different strengths, talents and weaknesses. By encouraging individual interests and dreams parents build self-esteem and self-worth in their children.

Tips & Warnings

  • Evaluate your family strengths and weaknesses to see where improvement is needed.
  • Be careful not to change too much at one time.
