How to Take Photograph in Low Light

  1. Step 1

Change your ISO level. If you camera allows it, increase the ISO level. ISO was used in terms of sensitivity with film based camera. The higher the ISO level, the more sensitive the film. One downside with this new found sensitivity--your pictures can tend to look grainier. Embrace it! Use the graininess to you advantage to create darker imagery. If you really dislike the "noise" you can fix it using different editing software like "Neat Image."

  2. Step 2

Change the aperture priority to the lowest F-stop Try F1.8 or lower, if your camera has it.

  3. Step 3

Shoot in RAW format if you camera has that capability.

  4. Step 4

Try a longer exposure. This will require a tripod. The camera is given a chance to gather more light this way. City lights look particularly great with this method!
