How to Protect Yourself Against a Cold

During the winter, we are more vulnerable to colds because the natural defense system present in our nose in the form of nose hair and nasal mucus freeze. In doing so, they are unable to control the appearance of germs and warm the air so it can reach our lungs at the right temperature. This increases colds, flus, bronchitis, influenza and pneumonia. The most vulnerable are the children and elderly. Read on to learn how to protect yourself against a cold.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Warm winter clothing
  • Healthy diet
  • 150 grams of cabbage
  • 150 grams of peeled oranges
  1. Step 1

    Bundle up and try to avoid sudden temperature changes. Keep your mouth and nose covered if you need to go outside.

  2. Step 2

    Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C like carrots, papayas, guavas, oranges, clementines, limes, lemons, pineapples, chili peppers, rice and onions. Drink black or green tea.

  3. Step 3

    Wash your hands often with soap and warm water, especially after coming in contact with a sick person.

  4. Step 4

    Avoid going to places where there are too many people, like shopping malls. They are the ideal place to catch unwanted germs and colds.

  5. Step 5

    If you do catch a cold, rest at home and avoid going out while you are sick. Blend the cabbage and peeled oranges and take three times a day. Follow your doctor's instructions to avoid further complications.

  • Get the flu shot every fall.
  • If you get a cold, try the following home remedies: Apply a few drops of water with salt on your nose to soften mucosity and moisturize the skin around your nostrils. Gargle with a tsp. of salt dissolved in warm water or a tsp. of honey with raspberry leaves or lemon juice and hot water.
  • Vapor baths are relaxing, open the airways and moisten your nasal passages.
  • Use balms to soothe your nose. Menthol, eucalyptus and camphor open the nasal passages and help restore irritated skin.
  • Use an extra pillow to decongest your nasal passages and to make breathing easier.
