Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Towel
- Large box
- Compassion
Step1
Visually examine the bird. Does its leg or wing appear limp? Is the bird wrapped in fishing line or other fishing tackle? Assessing the problem will help determine the best approach of the capture.
Step2
Be calm. Talk softly and move with slow deliberate motions. Do your best to soothe the bird by keeping dogs and crowds of people away.
Step3
Grasp the bill. Pelicans will bite so be careful. Hold the bill firmly, but loose enough for the bird to be able to breathe.
Step4
Cover the bird's head with a towel or shirt. Being bird-brained, not being able to see what is happening will reduce the bird's stress level.
Step5
Keeping one hand on the bill, scoop the bird up in your free arm. Hold the bird pressed against your body to keep its wings from flapping.
Step6
Place the bird in a large box with plenty of holes for it to breathe.
Step7
Contact a bird rescue or wildlife care facility.
