Things You'll Need:
- Patience
-
Step 1
The cat is a bona fide member of your family; treat him accordingly. Respect the cat for being what it is: a cat. Cats scratch, cry, pee and poop.
-
Step 2
Make sure the cat has some kind of scratching post to use. Not all cats like all posts; so find something your cat uses. This will safe on wear and tear on your cat. Additionally, keep its nails trimmed.
-
Step 3
Communicate. Cats are vocal creatures and like to talk. Engage them in conversation. Tell the cat good morning. Bid them good-bye when you leave and hello upon your arrival back home. Cats can be very good listeners.
-
Step 4
Bring them presents once in a while. Catnip-filled mice are always welcome.
-
Step 5
Keep their litter box clean. Cats are fastidious by nature. If they could clean their litter boxes, they would never get dirty.
-
Step 6
Fresh water and no table scraps. Keep fresh water in their water bowls. Keep scrap feeding to a minimum. Once you start to feed a cat off your plate, it will soon come to expect and demand it.
-
Step 7
Spend time with your cat. If your cat feels lonely or insecure, it is more likely to act out.
