How to make Fry Bread

It's at all the Pow Wows! It probably wont be as good as Syd's Cherokee Fry Bread -since his is the best in the country.. but it will work! Fry bread came about as a result of reservation commodities. This is merely a variation of an older recipe of a corn made bread that was made and stored for traveling.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 C of flour
  • 1 Tsp of Sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Tsp of Baking Powder (rounded)

Step1
Mix in bowl and add enough water to make dough stiff.
Step2
Form into flat pieces one half inch thick and flour 4 inches across.
Step3
Put in very hot deep frying oil.
Step4
When it floats and it's light-golden, flip it over.
If it looks like a small bubbly frisbee...then you succeeded. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings

  • This can be eaten different ways.
  • By itself
  • Topped with Chili and cheese
  • Strawberries and cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Honey
  • Maple syrup
  • Don't work your dough too much or it will get too stiff and turn out like cookie dough.

on 3/9/2008 I haven't had fry bread in years! When my aunt passed, so did the fry bread (none of us learned how- we were too young). This recipe sounds so simple, I think I'll try it. Thank you!

on 1/16/2008 When I was a kid, there was a place where we could buy fry-bread in the summer, and it was always a treat! I'd forgotten about it until now- thanks for a great article, I'll have to try it tonight!

on 1/10/2008 Did you know "vegetarian" is an Indian word? It means "bad hunter"....lol. The truth is there are many recipes that are meat free.
