Making potato pancakes, or latkes, is a Jewish holiday tradition. The shredded, fried potato ends up tasting somewhat like a fancy hash brown. Making potato pancakes is fun and time-consuming, so get those kids in the kitchen with their hands washed to help and have fun. They'll enjoy the step by step process, they'll learn a new recipe for when they're grown up and maybe you'll start a new family tradition of your own. The result is a warm, tasty treat, either way!

  1. Step 1

Have the kids wash and peel the potatoes.

  2. Step 2

Let the kids try grating the potatoes with the grater into a bowl. Then let them try grating in the onion.

Have the kids add the beaten eggs, flour, salt and pepper. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to thicken.

  4. Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan. Drop tablespoonfuls of mixture into pan, flattening slightly. When they are brown around the edges, turn over and fry other side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Tips & Warnings
  • A food processor can be substituted for grating.
  • Watch kids' fingers when grating. Cuts happen easily!
