How to Become Successful with Customers

In todays retail world, the most successful people are the ones who know how to react to customers. In this article I will explain some things that will help you become the perfect people person in retail.

Step1
One of main things you need to learn is the first impression. Now here I want to talk about the appearance. What I mean is how you are dressed and groomed. Isn't there a huge difference between a guy wearing a nicely tailored black suit, complete with the tie and matching shoes, to the guy who is wearing regular jeans with a polo tucked slightly in? Of course there is! When a customer walks up to you, in the first 5-10 seconds, they can and will know part of who are you. Which that brings them to the point of step one: By just your looks, can I customer trust you?
Step2
Step 2 can give you an understanding of step 1 of course. Now if you have your dress code in line, its time to move on to the first interaction with a customer. So, lets pretend a customer walks up to you and you are in a good standing in appearance, its time for you to introduce yourself and make known some very important things. When a customer walks into a retail store (When I say retail I focus more on Clothing retail stores) they see the associate as the expert, not the novice. So it doesn't really matter if you started there today or have been in the biz for a while, they still think you are the expert in the store. Why? Well it's because they don't know you. See, the only thing that the customers know is the things the advertisers tell them. Now back onto Step 2....the interaction. We all know that we greet each other so with the customer its no different. However, I must say that it is the upmost importance for every greeting to a customer must be outstanding. If you get their trust, you will have it until you break it. So Step 2 is mostly about the greeting and being the expert no matter if you just started there or not.
Step3
Step 3 is the final step I am going to give. You must become a customers Personal Advisor. Since you should be the expert, you need to find a chain of customers. I am talking about those who keep coming and coming, sometimes everyday, to shop. Once you have you're own chain, you are becoming more and more successful. Remember, once you gain their trust, they will always come back to you ONLY if you're service is better than anyone elses.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes customers can be mean or rude, but just remember if you're not a manager, then you need to go to your manager. They have more structure in dealing with those situations.
  • If you are a manager, you must remember the rules and procedures you're own supervisor has given.
