A few pictures of the cut you are trying to achieve.
Sufficent funds to cover the haircut as well as anywhere from 15- 20% tip.
Step1
Gather a few pictures from online or magazines. Make sure to put your finger over the face of the model and truly look at the hair. Decide if that cut or style would truly look good on you.
Step2
Prepare a few questions with the pictures to ask the stylist. Make sure to different from a cut or a trim. Ask the stylist their professional opinion on the cut. Include questions like, " Is this a cut that would work well with the type of hair I have;" "How long will it take to achieve the desired look;" " What kind of commitment will I have with this cut/color." If you are getting color make sure to include a list of what you DON'T want to see;" I do not want to see any golden tones, I prefer ashy colors." Remember though that a great cut compliments an a amazing color. A good cut also brings out the things you like about your face..ie "I'd like to bring out my cheekbones so they can help take away my nose."
Step3
While receiving the cut ask about the different products she/he is using on you. It takes product to achieve a desired result. Ask the stylist while they are styling for tips and tricks.
Step4
When checking out make sure to book an appointment and purchase the products that they used or at least ask for some samples. If you find you have difficulty styling it at home call the salon and book a bang trim with stylist. Make sure to explain to the stylist your styling issues and how to fix them. A good cut/color is an investment. If they are unable to work with you then decide to find a stylist that will work one on one with you when you have issues. You are their walking billboard.
Tips & Warnings
Ask the stylist to show you an "inch" using her thumb and pointer finger. If you feel like she is off, immediately get out of the chair and walk away. Esp.. if you are just wanting a trim.
Not all stylist are trained to really work with their guest and explain everything to them. Make sure to find one that will meet with you if problems should arise.
