Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Tell your child you would like her to try a musical instrument. Ask her if she has a desire to play any one in particular.
Step2
Allow him to try that instrument, but keep a close ear on his progress and a close eye on his practice habits and motivation.
Step3
Maintain status quo if that instrument is working out. But if not, don't allow the child to become discouraged. Consider instruments better suited for the child.
Step4
Is your child too small to play the cello?
Think about the child's size. If small, perhaps a flute, clarinet or violin would be appropriate. If she is larger, she can handle a tuba or cello.
Step5
Buy a drum set if your child has a strong sense of rhythm and is high-strung or needs to rid himself of excess energy.
Step6
Consider your child's burgeoning musical tastes. If she enjoys classical music, try the flute or violin. If she prefers country, purchase a banjo. If she likes rock, set her up with an electric or bass guitar. If she enjoys jazz, try a trumpet or sax. The piano is also a fine choice for several musical genres.
