Step 1
Work up to a feverish intensity. Sticking tight to a receiver takes more than physical skills. It requires a will to do so.
-
Step 2
Backpedal with short, quick steps and cut hard along with the receiver. Many a receiver is lost on the initial cut. Once that is accomplished, it will be easier to stay with him throughout his pass route.
-
Step 3
Play the receiver, not the ball! Don't lose sight of the receiver. The receiver will let you know when the ball is on the way.
-
Step 4
Turn quickly toward the ball and become a receiver. The ball is up for grabs and it's just as much yours as it is his. If you react a tad late, don't let the receiver snag the ball. Knock it away hard.
-
Step 5
Don't bump or jar the receiver after the initial cut or when the ball is on the way. That will result in a penalty.
-
Step 6
Avoid being overly aggressive. Don't play for an interception, which can leave the receiver open if you're too late. Make certain you are in position to tackle if the receiver catches the ball. Cut in front of a receiver for an interception only if you're certain that the theft can be achieved.
-
Step 7
Practice sure tackling. Wrap your arms around the receiver below the waist and drag him down. Tackling above the waist will allow the receiver to keep his legs churning and will give him a better chance to break free.
