How to Make a Holiday Birthday Special

Many people share a birthday with a holiday. For days like Labor Day, this isn’t so bad. But when the holiday is Christmas, Easter or the 4th of July, the person can feel like they are getting the short end of the stick. Children especially feel like they are being cheated when their birthday isn’t an exclusive day. It will make them feel extra special if you go out of your way to give them their own celebration.

1. Celebrate the birthday a week or two ahead of any shared major holiday like Christmas. Have a party, give gifts and don’t associate the day at all with the upcoming holiday.
2. Always give birthday wishes first on the shared day. Instead of Happy 4th of July, start with Happy Birthday wishes. Even if you’ve celebrated the birthday earlier, remember the birthday wishes on the actual day.
3. Avoid having combined parties. Just because you’re already having a Memorial Day party to kick off the summer, doesn’t mean that someone’s birthday should be celebrated at the same time. Have the birthday party the weekend before or the weekend after the event.
4. Never give a combined gift. This happens the most to those born around Christmas time. Even if the present is small and inexpensive, give a gift just for the birthday.
5. Decorate for the birthday when celebrating. If the Christmas tree is up in one room, have the birthday party in a different room where birthday decorations will be the focal point.
