Find a Magazine Job in New York

The movie release of The Devil Wears Prada brought with it an influx of applicants to the already swelling magazine job market. While the fictional story portrayed in Devil shows an extreme side of publishing, the notion that many people would kill for a similar job holds true. If magazines are your passion and New York is your destination, read below to help secure your spot.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  1. Step 1

Bulk up your clip folder. Write for any and every publication you can find that accepts freelance submissions. Make sure you have a roster of at least five articles in the same style and on the same topic as the magazines to which you hope to apply.

  2. Step 2

Research major magazine publisher websites. Try Condé Nast (www.condenast.com), Dennis Publishing (www.dennispublishing.com), Hachette Filipacchi (www.hfmus.com), Hearst (www.hearst.com), Meredith Corporation (www.meredith.com) and Time Inc (www.timeinc.com).

  3. Step 3

Search on these websites under the “career” tab and peruse openings.

  4. Step 4

Ask friends in the industry if they know of any openings.

  5. Step 5

Draft a cover letter. Make sure the writing is tight, concise and conveys your honest interest in the industry.

  6. Step 6

    Update your resume.

  7. Step 7

Apply to as many jobs as you can which interest you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Accept all interview requests. Even if you don’t take the job, it will be good practice.
  • There are far more industry applicants than there are jobs. Keep at it and build your clip folder in the interim.
  • Magazines are notorious for offering low salaries. Make sure you can make ends meet on a low budget.
