How to Speak to Children

Some adults feel uncomfortable speaking to children. They wonder what to talk about and what language to use. Depending on the child's age you can basically speak to them freely. Children enjoy talking about themselves and their activities. Much like adults, children are happy to speak about almost anything.

    Instructions

Start with general conversation. Let the child lead the dialogue. Once the child has started talking, note how comfortable he seems. The child's first response will probably let you know where to direct the conversation. It is important to feed off the child and not talk over his head.

Physically drop to the child's level. Children can feel intimidated when speaking to adults because the child must always look up. At the start of the conversation, kneel, sit or drop into a squat so you can look the child in the eyes. The child will feel more at ease.

Avoid baby talk. Children will feel insulted if you talk with them below their intelligence level. Listen to the child's speaking level and discuss things in a way which she can understand without being condescending. Talk as if you were speaking to a friend, but avoid using big words that the child probably won't understand.
