How to Corroborate

If you are ever in doubt and you need absolute confirmation that what you think is real is actually true then you need some firmed up corroboration. In order to get this corroboration you need a witness to the same events you’re trying to establish. If you are a party involved and you want to give weight to what someone else has said, then you may corroborate. Just be wary as corroboration can get you into a lot of trouble if you are not careful.

How to Corroborate

Step1
State the Facts: A wise person once told me that the best way to remember what happened is to always tell the truth. So whether you’re Sam Spade or Joe Friday, the best way to be a good corroborator is to intone only what’s true. If you can remember that, then you are on your way to being a great corroborator.
Step2
Shore Up Support: Whether you’re corroborator or corroborating, you need to have at least one person who agrees with you. Once you’ve attained that magic number one though, the fun doesn’t need to stop there. You can get many people with whom you can corroborate. Once you are able to attain a level of support that is significant, then you can stop worrying about being a corroborator. Until that time you need to do more work.
Step3
Loud and Proud: The truth is that no one ever believes or remembers much truth and then it’s gone. So if you have got one person saying otherwise then you have got a problem. But as they say, the steam rises to the top so if you are absolutely certain that you saw what you saw the way you saw it then you should just say it loud and say it proud. People will begin seeping out of the woodwork in agreement with you until you are fully and completely exonerated.
Step4
Speak Up: If you are corroborating someone else’s story then your chore doesn’t end with your tacit agreement. You need to do the right thing and be able to back up a legitimate and true story (if you agree that you saw the same thing) with your conviction. Only then will you be considered a true corroborator.

Tips & Warnings

  • make sure you've got the right story
  • don't be too lax or flip in your retelling
