Educational computer software can satisfy the need for activity and teach concepts that are age-appropriate and fun. Not all computer games are equally educational, however. Shop for software that is suitable, relevant and affordable.

1. Look for games that will interest your preschooler. A fan of "Dora the Explorer" on TV may enjoy a Dora computer game that teaches shapes, for example. Characters that are familiar make learning fun and easy.

2. Read online reviews of preschool software. Parents who have witnessed their children playing particular games may offer insight into a game's difficulty, graphics and educational benefits. Reading reviews may keep you from spending money on a game that's not worth it.

3. Check the recommended age range. Most computer games and software programs for preschoolers will be labeled "preschool" or give an age range of 3 to 5. A game that is too advanced for your child may lead to frustration. Likewise, a game that is too easy may be boring.

4. Buy software that meets your computer requirements and limitations. Buy programs that are specific to a Mac or PC, for example. Some games require a lot of memory space, too.
