Any wood dresser can be transformed into a functional and great looking book case. You will need a weekend to make a book case from a dresser, so plan out some free time. The skills needed to turn a dresser into a bookcase are basic, but the results will look amazing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wood dresser
  • Wood boards
  • Screws
  • Wood trim
  • Power drill
  • Sand paper
  • Safety goggles
  • Level
  • Pencil

    Preparation

  1. Step 1

Remove the drawers from inside the book case. Set them aside for another project for another day.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew any metal hardware inside the dresser. All metal parts and hardware must be removed from the dresser to turn it into a bookcase.

  3. Step 3

Cut out the wood slats that run along the front of the dresser. Use a jigsaw to do this. Leave the case of the dresser completely intact.

  4. Step 4

Sand the rough edges of the wood that were made by the jigsaw.

  5. Step 5

Measure the inside of the wood dresser. Measure how deep and wide the inside of the case is. Measure how tall the dresser is as well.

  6. Step 6

Decide how many shelves you want. Cut out one piece of wood to the correct depth and width to fit your dresser for each shelf.

  7. Step 7

Cut three pieces of wood trim for each shelf. One piece should be the width of the inside of the dresser. The two side piece should be the depth of the dresser minus one inch.

  8. Step 8

Mark the inside of the dresser where you want your shelves to go. Place the level at the height of each shelf and draw a line with your pencil.

  9. Creating the Dresser Bookcase

  10. Step 1

Place the first back piece of trim on the back inside the front of the dresser. Screw it into place by pre-drill holes through the trim and slightly into the back wood of the dresser. Screw into place.

  11. Step 2

Repeat with the matching left and right pieces. Continue until all the trim has been screwed into place.

  12. Step 3

Slide one piece of wood shelving into place on top of each support system made from wood trim.

  13. Step 4

Sand the entire dresser, prime it and paint it to any color you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use real wood dressers for this project. MDF or pressed particle board dressers may not hold up to this heavy construction. Vintage wood dressers make awesome book cases.
  • Use a sturdy or sound wood dresser for this project. If the case of the dresser is unstable you will need to repair it first.
