How to Make a Valentine’s Candy Heart Garland

Valentine's candy hearts can easily be turned into a simple and fun heart garland in no time. This is a great Valentine’s Day craft for the whole family. Parents can perform the tasks that use the power drill, while the kids can string the heart garland.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Candy hearts
  • Power drill
  • Fishing line
  • Beads
  • Needle
  • 1/16 inch drill bit
  • Clear spray paint

Preparing the Beads

Step1
Open the bag of candy hearts. Choose a few broken or damage hearts to practice drilling.
Step2
Use the tiny drill bit on your power drill to drill holes through the hearts. Start on the right side and drill through the candy heart and out the left.
Step3
Drill holes through as many hearts as you need for the Valentine’s Day garland.
Step4
Lay the drilled candy hearts out on a sheet of newspaper.
Step5
Spray the hearts with a coat of clear spray paint. Let the paint dry, flip them over and spray the backs as well.

Assembling the Candy Heart Necklace

Step1
Cut off a piece of fishing line about 5 feet long. Tie one end in a knot. Slip one candy heart onto the fishing line string.
Step2
Slip a bead onto the fishing line next. Try to use a bead in an accent color like red as most writing on candy hearts is also red.
Step3
Continue slipping on alternating candy hearts and beads until the whole length of garland is full.
Step4
Tie the end of the fishing line into a knot to hold the Valentine’s day garland craft together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use small bead is you want the hearts to be the main focus of the Valentine’s Day garland craft. If you want you can use large wooden red beads and have the small candy hearts be the accents.
  • This simple candy heart garland also makes a great necklace for a little girl on Valentine’s Day. Just make the necklace about 15 to 20 inches in instead of 5 feet.
  • You can also drill candy hearts, paint them and then slip them onto earring kits from the craft store. These are fun and simple candy heart beads perfect for a variety of crafts.
  • This is a not a good necklace for small children. It is a fun craft and necklace for kids 12 years and older.
  • If you do not apply the coat of clear spray paint then the hearts will get sticky and dissolve if water touches them.
