How to Sew a Drawstring Laundry Bag

Learning how to sew a drawstring laundry bags is simple and easy. You do not need a pattern to sew your own laundry bag and it can be made in any size you need! This simple to make laundry bag is also perfect for storing soft toys and linens.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Cut out two pieces of fabric to 3 feet wide and 4 feet long. Iron each piece flat. Fold the sides over one inch of each of the 4 foot long pieces and iron the fold down flat.

  2. Step 2

    Fold the top edge of one of the bags over one inch. The top can be either one of the three feet wide ends. Iron the fold down. Fold the same edge over 2 inches and iron it down. Repeat this same step on the other piece of fabric.

  3. Step 3

    Sew the edge of the folded fabric down. Sew from one side to the other, leaving each end o the tunnel open. Repeat on the other piece of fabric.

  4. Step 4

    Lay one piece of fabric pattern side up on your table. Have the tunnel at the top of the fabric.

  5. Step 5

    Lay the second piece of fabric pattern side down onto the first piece. Again the tunnel should be at the top.

  6. Step 6

    Pin all three sides together, the two sides and the bottom. Do not pin the tunnels together, stop right below them.

  7. Step 7

    Start at the top right side and sew the two pieces of fabric together. Sew down the right side, across the bottom and up the left side. Stop before you hit the two tunnels at the top.

  8. Step 8

    Turn the draw string laundry bag inside out. Iron the bag flat and smooth. Use a steam setting if necessary.

  9. Step 9

    Cut your rope to 6 feet long. Tie a knot in one end of the rope. Insert the end of the rope through one of the tunnels and pull it out the other side until the knot catches on the end of the tunnel.

  10. Step 10

    Thread the end of the rope through the other tunnel and pull out the final opening. Tie this end of the rope into a knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can tie the two ends of the rope together to form one large loop if you want.
  • This simple pattern for a drawstring laundry bag can be made in any size, as large or small, as you want.
  • For a sturdy drawstring laundry bag use a thick material, like canvas.
