Most of the sweets I enjoy involve chocolate, but my mother made a great sweet, crunchy cookie that was a favorite with our family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 unbeaten egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 t. baking soda
  • 1 t. cloves
  • 1 t. cinnamon
  • 1 t. ginger
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  1. Step 1

Cream the shortening. Add 1 cup of sugar gradually and cream thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Add the egg and molasses and beat the mixture until it's smooth.

  3. Step 3

Sift the flour, baking soda, cloves, cinnamon and ginger into the creamed mixture and stir until it's thoroughly mixed.

  4. Step 4

Roll your dough into 1 inch balls, then roll them in the 1/2 cup of sugar.

  5. Step 5

Bake your cookies in a 350 degree oven for 16 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • For crisper cookies, form the dough into 3/4 inch balls.
  • Store the cookies separately. If you put them with other kinds of cookies, the spices make everything taste like Ginger Snaps.
