Things You'll Need:
- suede shampoo
- terry-cloth towel
- fine emery board
- leather conditioner
- shoe polish
-
Step 1
Read the manufacturer's label BEFORE cleaning or repairing fabric or leather items. Although some synthetics closely resemble natural materials, they require different treatment.
-
Step 2
Leather and suede are skin. They need to breathe so don't store them in airtight wraps or in damp, hot areas.
-
Step 3
Leather and suede absorb odors. So keep them away from moth balls, cedar chips, or anything else you don't want to smell like when you are wearing your leather or suede clothing.
-
Step 4
Imitation suede can be machine washable. Read the manufacturer's label.
-
Step 5
Natural suede can be hand washed with suede shampoo. Brush the suede with a terry cloth towel to raise the nap. Spots can be cleaned by rubbing them with a fine emery board.
-
Step 6
Keep leather from drying and cracking by regularly applying leather conditioner (available at shoe repair stores). Real leather needs to be cleaned by a professional, but spots can be buffed with shoe polish of a matching color.
