In order to be able to repair a Venetian blind, or anything else for that matter, you need to be able to visualize and understand how it works. What follows are the steps to repair or replace ladder tapes and lift cords.

  2. Step 2

Remove the blind and place it on a flat surface. Pry up the clips holding tapes to the bottom bar. Some blinds have a two-piece bar; slide apart the bar to expose the ends of the lift cords and ladder tape.

  3. Step 3

To free the lift cord, slide the knots through the keyhole openings. Once the cord is free, undo the knots. On a blind with two-piece bottom bar, cut off the knots and slide off the bottom clips.

  4. Step 4

Pull the adjustment loop until the ends of the lift cord reach the head box. Knot the ends of the lift cords to keep them from passing through the head box. That way you can use the old cord as a guide for installing the new one.

  5. Step 5

Pull slats from the ladder tapes. Undo tapes (they're looped over mounting bars or clips in the head box). Fold over the ends of the new tape, and staple to make a hem; loop hem over the bars or clips.

  6. Step 6

Undo the knots in the ends of the lift cords. Follow the path of the old cord when feeding the new one through the head box. Leave enough cord to reach the bottom bar and enough slack for the adjustment loop.

  7. Step 7

Thread the lift cord through the slats; feed it along alternating sides of tape rungs. Attach ladder tapes and lift cord to bottom bar. Slip equalizing buckle over adjustment loop. Rehang the blind.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read all of the instructions carefully to make sure you understand all of the steps before starting the project.

on 8/13/2008 By the time your blinds need new tape and cords, the manufacturer has discontinued these blinds. Good luck finding parts and you are better off buying new blinds.
