Make Sand Sculptures in a Vase
Make Sand Sculptures in a Vase

It's fun and easy to make colored sand sculptures in a vase, fish bowl or decorative bottle. Here's how to get started.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White play sand or contractor's sand
  • Colored chalks or pastels
  • Clear glass or plastic vase, fish bowl or bottle
  • Mortar and pestle or equivalent
  • Plastic containers with lids
  • Measuring cup with spout
  1. Step 1

Grind up a small piece of colored chalk or pastel with a mortar and pestle or in a heavy bowl with a blunt stick. Dump chalk into a small plastic container and fill it nearly full with white sand. Snap on lid and shake thoroughly to mix the color.

  2. Step 2

Repeat the first step with as many colors as you want to have. Next, pour either white or colored sand into a glass measuring cup to make the first layer. Pour the sand into a vase, small fish bowl or decorative bottle, in a layer about 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick.

  3. Step 3

Pour in alternating layers of different colors or white sand. Lean the glass vase or bottle slightly to make slanted layers. Use the tip of a knife to make scallops in the top sand layer around the edge of the vase, then add a thin layer of another color of sand. Use a skewer to poke through different layers and make V-shaped designs.

  4. Step 4

Display your vase with artificial flowers by carefully placing them in the center of the sand, if you like. If you're sculpting sand in a bottle, fill it nearly to the top and put in a cork or stopper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use newspaper to cover your work area when grinding chalk and pastel, to avoid a big cleanup.
  • Watch younger children closely--they will probably try to eat some of the sand.
