How to Eat Alone and Not Look Like a Loser

Dining alone is perfectly normal, some people even enjoy the peace and quiet it affords. But many people feel awkward about it and think they’ll look like a social outcast, a “loser.” While this fear might be a symptom of a deep-rooted psychological problem, here are some light-hearted tips on how to feel less self-conscious about eating alone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Pick a small table or booth, in the corner of the room if possible. Sit with your back to the room.
Step2
Take off your jacket and place it on the chair next to you. This will make it look like someone is just about to join you.
Step3
Place a book, magazine or newspaper next to your plate and read as you eat or hold it in front of your face if your order hasn’t yet arrived.
Step4
Keep your eyes down if you prefer not to read. Keeping your gaze averted will help you stay inconspicuous. If you like to “people watch,” do it surreptitiously, out of the corner of your eye or from behind your newspaper.
Step5
Take out your cell phone if you still need something to occupy yourself with. Fiddle with it, play games, check your voice mail or call a friend.
