Kids love having anything that they know is theirs and was made just for them. Making these simple personalized Tote Bags will give them a bag that can be used for all kinds of things and give you the ability to easily tell whose bag is whose.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Canvas tote bag in any size that is appropriate for your child.
  • Craft paint
  • Brushes
  • Stencils
  • Pencils

Step1
Purchase a blank canvas tote bag for your child in the size that you feel will best suit their needs. Smaller children will probably use a smaller bag. You can get these at most local craft stores.
Step2
Determine what theme your child's bag should be, it needs to be something that they really enjoy. It may be a cartoon character, a sport, music, butterflies, trains.
Step3
Use a pencil to lightly trace your design onto your bag. You can free hand or use stencils to put their name and the pictures onto the bags.
Step4
Go back and paint the pictures and name in with craft paints. Be sure to start at the top and work your way down the bag so that you do not get your hand in the paint and accidentally smear it.
Step5
After the bag dries you can use it for all kinds of things. They can fill it with activities to take in the car on a trip and keep them separated. Use it to carry bible and papers to church. It can be a bag that they take to the library to keep their book in so they know where they are when it is time to return them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask kids what kind of themes they would like to make sure it is something that they are really excited about.
  • If you are artistically challenged you can use iron on letters and pictures also to do the bag.

on 1/17/2008 Hey Larry,
Try soaking the brushes in a bowl of water with some fabric softener added. Soak the brushes for a little while until you notice the paint coming loose. Then swirl the brushes around in the water and use your fingers if need be to remove rest of the paint. Make sure you rinse brushes well and then let them dry. Try that and see if it helps... Happy painting!

on 1/17/2008 Any advice on how to clean brushes simply? I paint sometimes, but my hesitation is always over how to deal with the brushes afterwards (I usually discard them). I know terpentine is generally recommended, but what a mess, still. No? Better idea(s)?
