Being able to manage sexual energy is associated with good health, a sharp mind, psychic powers, acute senses and the ability to prolong life beyond the normal limits. 1. Many Taoist believe that the loss of ejaculatory fluids is a loss of qi, or life force. Retaining semen while still being able to orgasm is key in Taoist sexual practices. Exercises that strengthen the muscles around the prostate, anus and genitalia are one way of accomplishing this goal. Another method is though retrograde ejaculation, which is when the man applies pressure to the perineum before ejaculating.
2. More jing is also created for the man by ensuring that the woman orgasms as well. However, women are encouraged to orgasm as much as they desire. And according to Taoism, there are 9 steps in the female orgasm, but she is rarely taken past the fourth.
3. There are certain times when it's better to have to sex. It's best to avoid full and quarter moons, during the winter and summer solstices,or days when there is intense winds, rain, fog, cold or heat, thunder and lightning. Also, avoid sex during solar and lunar eclipses, when rainbows are present, or during violent acts of nature like an earthquake, hurricane or tornado.
4. Taoists don't engage in sex while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Women should avoid sex during menstruation and pregnancy.
5. The location is also an important factor to consider. Keep out of the glare of the sun, moon and stars, and keep a far distance from any sacred places of worship, wells, stoves, privies, graves and coffins. Sunsets are also not ideal times for sex because this is a time of low energy.
6. The eyes should remain closed during sex because the eyes are the windows of the soul and energy is lost through the eyes. Energy is concentrated in the genitalia so the rest of the body needs to be protected. Internal focus is key. This is especially true for men.
